For the past 15 years our family has been living off-the-grid with only Solar and Wind Generator Power. After building our own home we turned our attention to the problem of finding alternative energy options for our home that we could actually afford.

15 years of Producing Green Power and Living Off-the-Grid

Here’s how this all got started: Over fifteen years ago I had decided to build our own home. It was the mid 90s and the internet was in its infancy. Back then I knew I wanted to become self-sufficient and “live off the grid”. I was determined to make less of an impact on the planet. The “Greenhouse Effect” was a major driving force behind my motivation. The alternative energy options on the market were either expensive solar panels or complicated wind turbines.

We decided to make a serious investment and go with both.

First I put up a few solar panels. Then I purchased and installed a wind generator. We did all of the installation work ourselves. The installation process seemed straightforward. But this was not the first time we ever took on a weekend project. You could only imagine the number of questions we got from our friends. Everyone wanted to know how much we were saving. When we told them . . . they couldn’t believe it. Business took off. I was getting calls night and day from others who wanted to install solar panels or wind turbines. I couldn’t believe there was such a demand.

The main drawback of the systems we installed, however, was the upfront investment. To create electricity for a normal family, the average upfront cost was around $10,000. Most people just didn’t have that kind of cash laying around. The most expensive to install was the wind generator. It could set you back anywhere from $4,000 – $6,000 depending on how much energy you needed to produce. Yeah, you would eventually get your investment back by eliminating your electrical bill, but it would take 10 or more years. I mean, you’d have to be more than committed to green energy; you’d have to have money and be committed to green energy.

It wasn’t fair. Our inquirers were already more green committed than most people just for considering owning a wind turbine over paying the power companies. Many simply couldn’t afford the installations.
